Cornwall Bird Guiding – Day 1 and off to a good start!
First day bird guiding for American Birder, Steve Dexter. Despite the weather we managed to rack up 72 species, which he is more than happy with! Me Too! Below are todays records:
Day 1 – Sunday 10th May 2015 (0500-1330hrs)
Weather – Thick fog during the morning then clearer but dull for rest of day
Porthgwarra – (thick fog!) – Sparrowhawk, Grasshopper Warbler (reeling), Whitethroat, Blackcap, 2 Pheasant, 1 Meadow Pipit, 6 Linnet, 3 Stonechat, 40+ Jackdaw, 30+ Swallow, 2 Sand Martin, 4 Goldfinch, 2 GBB Gull, 1 Dunnock, 1 Song Thrush, Starling, Magpie, 1 Great Tit. Steady stream of Manx Shearwaters, Fulmar, Gannet and Auk sp. passing close offshore. 3 Bullfinch, Collared Dove and Moorhen at Polgigga.
Marazion Marsh – Ruff, Wheatear, Stonechat, 4 Cetti’s Warbler, 3 Wren, male Reed Bunting, numerous Sedge and Reed Warbler heard, 6 Grey Heron, 2 Little Egret, 2 adult and 5 Juv Canada Goose, 2 Mute Swan, 1 Mallard. Also Dunlin, 6 Oystercatcher and 6 Whimbrel on beach and 4 Sandwich Terns offshore.
Hayle Estuary – Ruff, Dunlin, Ringed Plover, Greenshank, 7 Oystercatcher, 5+ Whimbrel, 2 Curlew, 60+ Herring Gull, 6+ GBB Gull, 9 Mute Swan, 16 BH Gull, Pied Wagtail, 2 House Sparrow, 3 House Martin, 10+ Swallow, 8 Shelduck. Ryan’s Field – 1 Common Sandpiper, 2 Little Egret, 5 Whimbrel, 5 BH Gull, 4 Canada Geese, Great Tit, Greenfinch, 3 Reed Warbler, Robin, Chiffchaff, Blackcap, 4 Chaffinch, 1 Grey Heron. Copperhouse Creek – LBB Gull, 10+ Rook, Little Egret, Herring Gull.
St Gothian Sands LNR, Gwithian – 25+ Swallows, 35+ Sand Martin, 3 House Martin, 10 Swift, 2 Raven, 1 Reed Bunting, 4 Shelduck, 1 Common Sandpiper, 7 Wheatear, 2 Stonechat, Kestrel, 8 GBB Gulls, 30+ Herring Gull, 10+ Jackdaw, Whitethroat, Blackcap, Moorhen, Chiffchaff, 2 Buzzard, Dunnock, Wren, Carrion Crow.
Hell’s Mouth – Shag (4+ breeding), Cormorant (breeding with young), Fulmar (breeding), 2 Guillemot, 5+ Swallow, Jackdaw
