Day 2 with my American friend! Another great day, adding 13 new species to the tally. Highlights were the two Cuckoos performing superbly at Rosewall Hill and a very pleasant hour in the morning sunshine at Stithians with singing warblers! Todays birds below:
Day 2 – Monday 11th May 2015 (0500-1430hrs)
Weather – Misty and damp with light rain until 8am when cleared to be bright and sunny all day
Helston Loe Pool – 2 Tawny Owl calling (05.30hrs), Great-spotted Woodpecker, 9+ Blackcap, Coal Tit, 2 Chiffchaff, Song Thrush, Jay, 4+ Robin, 6+ Blackbird, 3 Moorhen, 2 Cormorant. Helston Boating Lake – 7 Mute Swan, 3 Tufted Duck, 4 Coot, 20+ Herring Gull, 15+ Mallard (with young). Helston Sewerage Works – 30+ Swallow, 20+ Sand Martin, 8+ House Martin, Chiffchaff, Robin and Pied Wagtail.
Swanpool, Falmouth – Long-tailed Duck, 3 Cormorant, 8 Coot, 2 Mute Swan (with 3 cygnets), Tufted Duck, 7+ Mallard. Guillemot and Great Northern Diver offshore.
Stithians – (Stuart Hutchings Hide) 3 Great Crested Grebe (2 building nest), 3 Cormorant, 40 Herring Gull, 2 Lesser Black Backed Gull, 1 Tufted Duck, 4 Mallard, 2 Long-tailed Tit, 1 Willow Warbler and 1 Chiffchaff. (Southern Cut-off Hide) – Garden Warbler, Lesser Whitethroat (heard), Great Spotted Woodpecker, 3 Reed Bunting, Canada Goose, 2 Little Grebe, 2 sedge Warbler, 1 Grey Heron, 6+ Dunnock, 2 House Sparrows, Wren, Robin, Blackcap, 4+ Chaffinch, 4 Willow Warbler, Chiffchaff, 2 Great Tit, 2+ Blue Tit and Blackbird. (Dam Wall) – Pied Wagtail, 4+ Swallow, 2 Whitethroat
Hayle Estuary – (Lelant Saltings) – 1 Black-tailed Godwit, 1 Bar-tailed Godwit, 8+ Shelduck, 14+ Black-headed Gulls, 80+ Herring Gulls, 12+ GBB Gull, 2 LBB Gull, 6 Oystercatcher, Little egret, 2 Curlew, 2 Whimbrel. (Ryan’s Field) – 6 Little Egret, 2 Sand Martin, 4+ Swallow, 2 Buzzard, Woodpigeon, Jackdaws, 2 Oystercatcher (mating), Reed Warbler, 4 Canada Geese, 6 Black-headed Gull, 3 Whimbrel.
Rosewall Hill – 2 Cuckoo, 1 Wheatear, 2 Meadow Pipit, 1 Raven, 3 Wren, Magpie and 2 Buzzard.
